Plank Cuts

Three simple terms to describe the parts of a board.

End grain: The end or cross-section of a squared board.

Side grain: A tangential cut parallel to the rings. In other words, the narrower side of a squared board.

Flat grain: A radial cut at right angles to the rings. In other words, the wider side or top of a squared board.

*Squared means cut at a right angle.
