Sycamore Pencil Block

Scientific Name: Platanus occidentalis

Origin: Eastern United States

Average Weight: 34 lbs/ft³ (545 kg/m³)

Common Uses: Interior. Veneers, plywood, interior woodwork, pallets/boxes, flooring, furniture, particle board, paper (pulp wood), tool handles, and other turned objects.

Color/Appearance: Easy to work with, being very soft and lightweight. It is one of the most suitable woods for hand carving. Sycamore also glues and finishes well, but has poor characteristics for steam bending and nail holding.

  • Radial: 5%

  • Volumetric: 24.1%

Workability: Overall, Sycamore is easy to work with both hand and power tools, though cross-grain can sometimes be problematic during surfacing and machining. Sycamore turns, glues, and finishes well but does not respond well to steam bending.
