Description

Cherry - Rough Cut Lumber (Sweet Cherry, Wild Cherry, European Cherry)

Scientific Name: Prunus avium

Origin: United States

Average Weight: 39 lbs/ft³ (600 kg/m³)

Common Uses: Indoor use. Veneers, furniture, cabinetry, turned objects, musical instruments, and carvings.

Color/Appearance: Cherry wood is a light pinkish-brown when freshly cut, darkening to a medium reddish-brown over time and with exposure to light. Its grain is usually straight and easy to work with. It has a fine, uniform texture with a moderate natural luster.

Shrinkage:

  • Radial: 5.1%
  • Tangential: 8.4%
  • Volumetric: 13.8%
  • T/R Ratio: 1.6

Workability: Cherry is known to be one of the best all-around woods for workability. It is stable, straight-grained, and machines well. The only difficulties typically arise when staining the wood, as it can sometimes yield blotchy results. It's recommended to use a sanding sealer before staining or to use a gel-based stain.

Responds well to steam bending.

Density: Janka Hardness: 1,150 lbf - For comparison: White Pine 420 lbf - Black Cherry 1,260 lbf
