Basswood - Rough Cut Lumber

Scientific Name: Tilia americana

Origin: Northeastern North America

Average Weight: 26.0 lbs/ft³ (415 kg/m³)

Common Uses: Interior/Exterior. Sculptures, woodwork, musical instruments (electric guitar bodies), veneers, plywood, and wood pulp and fiber products.

Color/Appearance: Pale white to light brown, with sections of sapwood and heartwood not clearly defined. Growth rings tend to be subtle, and the color is generally uniform throughout the wood grain. Knots and other defects are rare.

Shrinkage:

  • Radial: 6.6%
  • Tangential: 9.3%
  • Volumetric: 15.8%
  • T/R Ratio: 1.4

Workability: Easy to work with, being very soft and lightweight. It is one of the most suitable woods for hand carving. Linden also glues and finishes well but has poor steam bending and nail holding characteristics.
