Description

Western Red Cedar - Rough Cut Lumber - Kiln Dried (KD)

Scientific Name: Thuja plicata

Origin: Western Canada, United States (West)

Average Weight: 23.0 lbs/ft³ (370 kg/m³)

Common Uses: Outdoor use. Shingles, exterior siding and lumber, boatbuilding, boxes, crates, and musical instruments.

Color/Appearance: Heartwood is reddish to pinkish brown, often with random streaks and bands of darker red/brown areas. The narrow sapwood is pale yellowish-white and is not always clearly demarcated from the heartwood.

Shrinkage:

  • Radial: 2.4%
  • Tangential: 5%
  • Volumetric: 6.8%
  • T/R Ratio: 2.1

Workability: Easy to work with both hand and machine tools, although it dents and scratches very easily due to its softness and may sand unevenly due to the difference in density between earlywood and latewood. It glues and finishes well. Iron-based fasteners can stain and discolor the wood, especially when moisture is present.

Responds well to steam bending.

Density: Janka Hardness: 350 lbf - For comparison: White Pine 420 lbf - Black Cherry 1,260 lbf
