Butternut - Rough Cut Lumber
Scientific Name: Juglans cinerea
Origin: United States (East)
Average Weight: 27 lbs/ft³ (435 kg/m³)
Common Uses: Indoor use. Veneers, carvings, furniture, interior paneling, boxes, and crates.
Color/Appearance: The heartwood is generally light to medium brown, sometimes with a reddish hue. The growth rings are darker and create fairly distinct grain patterns. The sapwood is a pale yellowish-white.

Workability: Butternut is easy to work by hand and machine. However, due to its softness, Butternut tends to leave fuzzy surfaces after planing or sanding, so sharp tools and fine-grit sandpaper are recommended. It glues, stains, and finishes well.
