Description

Select roasted poplar - Rough Cut Lumber

Scientific name: Liriodendron tulipifera

Origin: United States (East)

Average weight: 29 lb/ft³ (455 kg/m³)

Common uses*: Furniture, boxes and utility projects.

Colour/appearance: Ranging from medium to dark brown, roasted poplar has the same grain as yellow poplar.

Withdrawal :
Radial: 4.6%
Tangential: 8.2%
Volumetric: 12.7%
T/R ratio: 1.8

Workability: Very easy to work with, the only drawback of poplar is its low density. For this reason, the edges can be quite fragile or even brittle, especially during machining and sanding. Sanding with finer sandpaper may be necessary to obtain a smooth surface.

Density: Janka scale : 540 lbf - For comparison: White pine 420 lbf - Wild cherry 1260 lbf

Manufacturing: Torrefied wood is obtained by heating hardwoods to high temperatures in a controlled environment. The wood is cut to size and dried. It is then placed in a kiln and heated to between 160°C and 260°C (320°F and 500°F) in the absence of oxygen to prevent burning. This process lasts several hours, followed by a slow cooling period. Moisture is then gradually added to the wood until it reaches between 5% and 7%. This process alters the molecular structure of the wood, making it more resistant to moisture and insects.

*Although torrefied wood is commonly used in outdoor applications, we cannot guarantee the durability of this product against weathering.
