Description

Birch - Rough Cut Lumber

Scientific Name: Betula papyrifera

Origin: North and Central America

Average Weight: 38 lbs/ft³ (610 kg/m³)

Common Uses: Indoor use. Furniture. Plywood, boxes, crates, turned objects, interior trim, and other small specialty wooden items.

Color/Appearance: The heartwood tends to be light reddish-brown, with almost white sapwood. Occasionally, figured pieces are available with a wide, shallow curl similar to that found in Cherry. There is virtually no color distinction between annual growth rings, giving Birch a somewhat dull and uniform appearance.

Shrinkage:

  • Radial: 6.3%
  • Tangential: 8.6%
  • Volumetric: 16.2%
  • T/R Ratio: 1.4

Workability: Generally easy to work with hand tools and machine tools, though boards with wild grain can cause tear-out during machining. It turns, glues, and finishes well.

Density: Janka Hardness: 1,260 lbf - For comparison: White Pine 420 lbf - Maple 1,450 lbf
