Scientific name: Berlinia (species)

Origin: West Africa

Average weight: 45 lb/ft3 (725 kg/m3)

Common uses: Woodworking, veneer, specialty wood items.

Color/Appearance: Heartwood ranges from golden yellow brown to a reddish brown, often with darker black streaks and stripes. The lighter sapwood contrasts with the color of the heartwood.

Shrinkage:

Radial: 4.7%

Tangential: 8.7%

Volumetric: 13.2%

T/R ratio: 1.9

Workability: Generally easy to work with hand tools or machines, although planing can lead to tearing when the grain is interlocked, particularly on quarter-sawn surfaces. Sticks, turns and finishes well.

Density: Janka Hardness: 1,280 lbf - For comparison: White pine 420 lbf – Yellow Birch 1,260 lbf
