Description

Ambrosia Maple – Rough Cut Lumber

Scientific Name: Acer saccharum (species)

Origin: Northeastern North America

Average Weight: 30.2 to 38.0 lbs/ft3 (485 to 610 kg/m3) depending on species

Common Uses: Furniture, cutting boards, turned objets, specialty wood items.

Color/Appearance: Ambrosia Maple takes its name from the Ambrosia Beetle, a bug that infects generally Soft Maple or Red Maple. When the bug penetrates the wood, it leaves a trail of fungi for its larvae to feast on. This results in an unique grain patern that gives Ambrosia Maple its distinctive look. It has tiger-like gray stripes across its grain with small holes in them. Wood sold in lumberyards are free of insects. Color ranges generally from light beige to medium brown.

Workability: Fairly easy to work with both hand and machine tools, though has a tendency to burn when being machined with high-speed cutters such as in a router. Glues, and finishes well, though the small holes in the wood need to be filled.

DensityJanka Hardness: 950 lbf - For comparison: White Pine 420 lbf - Yellow Birch 1,260 lbf
