Tupelo - Rough Cut Lumber (Water Tupelo, Tupelo-gum)

Scientific Name: Nyssa aquatica

Origin: Southwest United States

Average Weight: 34 lbs/ft³ (550 kg/m³)

Common Uses: Carving, furniture, boxes, and utility wood.

Color/Appearance: The sapwood is very wide and generally pale yellow, sometimes with a grayish cast. The heartwood is narrower and ranges from medium brown to gray. Quarter-sawn surfaces exhibit banded patterns due to the interlaced grain.

Shrinkage:

  • Radial: 4.2%
  • Tangential: 7.6%
  • Volumetric: 12.5%
  • T/R Ratio: 1.8

Workability: Tupelo is easy to work with both hand tools and machines, although it tends to warp during drying and has significant movement. It responds well to carving.
